Implan gigi adalah prosedur penanaman akar gigi buatan yang berbentuk seperti baut pada rahang untuk menopang mahkota gigi buatan. Implan gigi pada umumnya terbuat dari logam khusus, seperti titanium.

Implan gigi merupakan sekrup titanium yang ditanamkan pada rahang gigi yang berfungsi sebagai pengganti akar gigi yang hilang serta untuk menahan gigi palsu. Pemasangan implan gigi dapat dilakukan jika Anda memiliki gigi yang sudah tanggal atau gigi ompong, namun tidak ingin menggunakan gigi palsu lepasan atau pasien yang tidak mau merusak gigi-gigi di sebelah bagian ompong.

Implan gigi mempunyai manfaat fungsional dan estetik. Dengan implan gigi, fungsi pengunyahan diperbaiki, sehingga pasien dapat mengunyah makanan dengan lebih baik. Selain itu, dalam fungsi estetiknya, implan dapat mengembalikan senyum pasien menjadi lebih menawan dengan susunan gigi yang mirip dengan gigi asli.

Implan gigi lebih rigid dan stabil sehingga memiliki kekuatan gigitan yang baik. Implan gigi juga tahan terhadap rusak dan busuk, tidak seperti gigi asli kita, sehingga awet dan dapat digunakan dalam jangka waktu yang sangat lama.

Implan gigi tidak dianjurkan pada anak-anak, lebih tepat bagi pasien dewasa atau ketika pertumbuhan tulang sudah selesai. Sebenarnya tidak ada kontra indikasi yang mutlak untuk pemasangan implan gigi ini, akan tetapi untuk pasien yang mempunyai kebiasaan merokok sebaiknya dikurangi atau berhenti sama sekali dari kebiasaan tersebut.

Untuk pasien yang mempunyai riwayat penyakit diabetes mellitus, harus mengontrol kadar gulanya dulu sebelum melakukan pemasangan implan gigi.

Untuk pasien dengan riwayat penyakit sistemik tertentu sebaiknya melakukan konsultasi pada Dokter Spesialis Penyakit Dalam untuk mendapatkan persetujuan tindakan pemasangan implan gigi tersebut, karena implan gigi merupakan suatu prosedur bedah minor yang harus memenuhi beberapa persyaratan kesehatan.

Kelebihan Implan :

Tidak harus mengecilkan gigi-gigi sebelahnya yang sehat.
Implan berdiri sendiri pada tulang rahang, sesuai dengan keadaan gigi yang seharusnya.
Lebih kuat dalam menahan beban kunyah, karena langsung disalurkan ke tulang rahang dan beban kunyah tidak terbagi ke gigi lain (tidak seperti ketika membuat bridge).
Gigi implan tidak bisa mengalami proses caries, sehingga tidak akan berlubang.
